Small Wooden Pegs

Pegs have been used for probably over a century now by people all over the world to hang their clothes. However, while plastic pegs have managed to make some headway into the market it seems as though small wooden pegs are still preferred by most people who fear that plastic will simply break under pressure. The truth is that the wooden pegs today come in a number of different types and not every type of wooden peg is as durable as most people think. Many companies are using low quality wood in their wooden pegs in order to keep costs low which results in pegs that resemble matchstick wood.

When looking for good quality small wooden pegs you need to pay special attention to the following:

  • Thickness of the pegs
  • Do you see discoloration and cracks in the pegs?
  • Does the surface of the pegs look rough or smooth?
  • Do the pegs bend easily?

Thickness of small wooden pegs is important

Even if a manufacturer is using low quality wood if the pegs are thick they could still be durable. Now since it going to be difficult to know if the pegs you want to purchase is the right thickness by just looking at them the best way to determine this is to give the pegs a slight bend. If the peg breaks, snaps, cracks or you feel that it can bend easily then the pegs are not what you should purchase. Ideally the pegs should feel rock solid.

Discoloration and Cracks

Oftentimes manufacturers will not treat and finish the wood as they should to ensure durability. This results in discoloration and cracks in the pegs even if they have been lying around on the supermarket shelf for quite some time. If you come across pegs which are cracked or seem to have small holes or cracks in them then it is best to move on. The small wooden pegs you purchase should have uniform color and should feel smooth. If you are looking at colored wooden pegs then look for cracks in the color or chipping of the color.

Smooth Vs Rough

Wooden pegs which are smooth and have a glossy finish are often ones that a manufacturer has ensured is of good quality. These are the pegs you should choose and they will probably last years. However, ones that feel rough should be avoided at all costs, if anything they will not be able to stand the first week of use.

Watch out for bending pegs

If you are in the market for pegs and they seem as though they are easily bending under moderate pressure then you can bet that they are low quality pegs. These small wooden pegs will also not have the grip strength you may need to ensure that you heavy laundry stays on your line in the event of even moderate breeze. You are better off purchasing something more expensive since it pays for itself over time as you continue to use it.
